When movies came along and people started watching them, writers
had to find ways to make books feel like films. They had to learn how to
paint pictures in the reader’s mind. In this story, words are skillfully
selected to help the readers create mental pictures and understand what
the world was like around 1,000 years ago. That’s when Ngai, their God,
created Kikuyu and Mũmbi and gave them His blessing to start the
Kikuyu tribe.
Gikuyu and Mũmbi had nine daughters, and last of them, Wamũyũ,
decided to stay single and take care of her parents. Because of her kind
heart, she was blessed and became the wealthiest of all her sisters.
The story wants you to understand: it’s okay to accept the life you have
without always comparing yourself to others. The big message is how
good it feels to put others first. Wamũyũ is an example to single women,
who sometimes are viewed as if they’re not complete if they aren’t
married. The book shows the world that single mothers are just normal
people who have taken a different road, either by choice or because life
was a little unfair.
The major ideas you’ll in the story of Wamũyũ are: How women are
silently judged, especially by men. The continuing negative effects of
family situations.
Having hope and bouncing back from problems. The freedom to choose
your path. The importance of family and friends. Finding peace and
healing.
